Peruvian Journalists Protest on Press Day Amid Escalating Attacks
On October 1, 2025, journalists across Peru held nationwide protests to mark Press Day, denouncing over 200 attacks against the media and highlighting a deepening crisis for freedom of expression, reports 24brussels.
In Lima, the National Association of Journalists of Peru (ANP) led a significant demonstration outside the Palace of Justice, emphasizing the growing violence and systematic harassment faced by media workers. The ANP pointed out that judicial persecution and police aggression have emerged as ongoing threats to press freedom in the country.
Protesters voiced concerns over police conduct during news coverage, asserting that law enforcement officials frequently obstruct reporting efforts and perpetuate patterns of repression. The ANP documented eight assaults on journalists during the September protests in Lima, with six of those incidents involving police officers.
The mobilizations reached various regions, where journalists reported more severe conditions for local reporters. The ANP noted that judicial harassment and physical violence against the press are notably intensified outside the capital.
The organization called on authorities to take immediate action to halt attacks on journalists and to guarantee a supportive environment for freedom of the press throughout Peru.
