Mandelson Calls for Super Bowl to be Held in Britain
Peter Mandelson, former UK trade minister, expressed his desire to host the Super Bowl in Britain during a recent event, asserting, “I want that Super Bowl in Britain. I don’t care when it takes place but I want it announced while I’m ambassador,” reports 24brussels.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan previously urged for the Super Bowl to take place in the city to enhance its reputation as the “sporting capital of the world.” He stated, “The Super Bowl is really important for us. We have a number of American football games and I want it to come here because we want American sports fans in Europe to come to London to watch them, not just go to America.”
While London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is set to host two NFL games in October, the Super Bowl 2026 will occur at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on February 8. Since the Super Bowl’s inception in 1967, it has never been held outside the United States.
The push to bring major sporting events to the UK extends beyond football. Eric Trump has advocated for the U.S. president’s Turnberry golf course in Scotland to host the Open Championship, which last took place there in 2009, five years prior to Trump’s acquisition of the estate. Nevertheless, event organizers noted that logistical challenges and commercial viability make such events unlikely in the near future.
