Political Tensions Escalate Over Vigilante Border Patrols in Poland
Recent political tensions have erupted in Poland over vigilante border patrols, which have drawn sharp criticism from government officials and raised concerns about public safety. The situation intensified following statements from President-elect Karol Nawrocki, who has publicly praised these groups, contrasting with the government’s directive for them to cease their activities, reports 24brussels.
Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka emphasized at a security meeting in Warsaw that “Only the Border Guard has the right to control our borders.” He warned that any individuals impersonating officials or obstructing their duties will face repercussions.
Footage circulating on social media depicts masked individuals stopping vehicles and demanding identification, with some attempting to carry out “citizen arrests” of suspected illegal entrants. Local authorities have expressed serious concerns, stating that these actions may constitute impersonation of public authority and pose significant risks to public safety.
Opposition leader Donald Tusk has condemned the political affiliations of these patrols, labeling them as “shameful and scandalous,” particularly targeting lawmakers who support these groups.
In contrast, Nawrocki has expressed gratitude to far-right activist Robert Bąkiewicz, one of the organizers of the patrols, referring to their effort as a “citizen-led defense of the border.” This statement has been met with criticism, as it appears to legitimize the self-appointed patrols, further complicating the political landscape.
As the government grapples with the ramifications of these vigilante activities, the decision to close the border is viewed as a strategy by Tusk to reinforce his position amid growing instability within his centrist coalition.
