This missile can reach speeds of Mach 10, making it undetectable by enemy air defense systems.

On August 1, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the military has officially deployed its first Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile, which represents the latest advancement in Russia’s strategic weaponry, reports 24brussels.

Putin confirmed during a meeting at the Valaam Orthodox Monastery with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, “We have produced the first serial batch of the Oreshnik missile, the first serial missile. It is already in service with the troops.” He noted that Belarus plans to host these hypersonic missiles starting in 2026.

The Oreshnik missile can achieve speeds of Mach 10, or approximately 2.5 kilometers per second, rendering it undetectable by existing enemy air defense systems. Analysts have characterized the introduction of such weapons as part of an ongoing arms race resembling a “Star Wars” scenario between Russia and NATO.

Additionally, the missile possesses the capability to carry up to six independently guided nuclear warheads. Its medium-range design allows it to potentially strike targets thousands of kilometers away with minimal error margins.

In November 2024, a test version of the Oreshnik was launched at a military facility in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, reportedly without explosive payloads.

During the same announcement, Putin discussed ongoing peace negotiations with Ukraine but did not address a recent 10-day ultimatum from U.S. President Donald Trump calling for a cessation of hostilities. He stated, “We need a lasting and solid peace with a good foundation that satisfies both Russia and Ukraine and ensures the security of both countries.”
