Senate Democrats Introduce Resolution for Recognition of Palestinian State

On Thursday, September 18, 2025, a group of Senate Democrats introduced a resolution advocating for U.S. recognition of a demilitarized Palestinian state, marking a historic move in the chamber’s legislative action, reports 24brussels.

The nonbinding resolution calls on Hamas to disarm and release hostages, while urging Israel to cease military actions and halt settlement expansions. However, the initiative faces significant challenges as it lacks support from the Republican majority in the Senate.

Supporters argue that the resolution conveys a critical message as several U.S. allies prepare to endorse Palestinian statehood at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly. They believe it could intensify pressure on the Biden administration to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

“Recognition of a Palestinian state is not only a practical step the United States can take to help build a future where Palestinians and Israelis can live in freedom, dignity and security, but it is the right thing to do. America has a responsibility to lead, and the time to act is now,” stated Senator Jeff Merkley, who spearheaded the resolution.

Merkley further emphasized the need for a two-state solution, warning that Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza could lead to detrimental outcomes for both Israelis and Palestinians. “But then, a foundation for peace and prosperity for the future — and the only viable path for that is two states for two peoples,” he added.

Amid these developments, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Thursday that the last civilian lifelines in Gaza City are collapsing amidst Israel’s military actions, which have resulted in extensive casualties and destruction. As of September 18, health authorities based in Gaza indicated that over 65,000 Palestinians have died since the onset of the conflict on October 7, 2023.
