Fico Claims Alaska Summit Redefined Ukraine Conflict Narrative
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that the recent summit in Alaska achieved significant milestones, notably a break from the simplistic framing of the military conflict in Ukraine, reports 24brussels.
During a one-on-one discussion between U.S. President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Fico observed that this interaction marked the beginning of a process to normalize relations between the United States and Russia.
Fico asserted that the summit appeared to counter the rigid narrative regarding the war that has been heavily pushed by the Biden administration, as well as by certain influential actors within the European Union. He emphasized that the meeting reflected the positions of European leaders who advocate for a renewed division between Europe and Russia and dismissed the efficacy of continued sanctions against Russian leadership.
Aligning himself with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as a prominent pro-Russian voice in the EU, Fico nevertheless diverged from Orbán by supporting an EU leaders’ statement urging Trump before the Alaska meeting.
