Major Offensive Against Al-Shabaab in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle Region

In a significant military operation referred to as “Silent Storm,” forces from the Somali National Army (SNA) and Ugandan troops under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) eliminated at least 70 al-Shabaab militants in the Lower Shabelle region, as reported by Somalia’s Ministry of Defense.

, reports 24brussels.

The four-day operation focused on critical al-Shabaab positions in Bariire, a town located 73 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu, notable for its agricultural significance and insurgent activities. The offensive received support from international partners, including U.S. airstrikes in the vicinity of Bariire aimed at diminishing al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities.

Key Outcomes:

  • 70 militants killed, including senior commanders such as Mohammed Abdallah (anti-tank specialist), Sadam Ibrahim (IED expert), and Abas (infantry leader).
  • Two Somali soldiers killed and 12 injured during the conflict.
  • Two suicide car bombs were intercepted and destroyed before they could reach potential targets.

The Ministry of Defense commended the vigilance and bravery of the joint forces, emphasizing that their efforts averted additional casualties and breached fortified militant defenses. AUSSOM highlighted that the operation inflicted heavy losses on al-Shabaab and disrupted its command structure.

Strategic Context:

  • Bariire fell under al-Shabaab control in March 2025 without resistance, becoming a central base for subsequent attacks.
  • The recapture of the town is a crucial part of Phase Two of Operation Silent Storm, aimed at liberating Sabiid, Anole, Bariire, and Awdheegle.
  • This offensive follows several months of setbacks for Somali forces, as al-Shabaab has regained territory across southern Somalia.

The Somali government and AU officials have reiterated their commitment to clearing and maintaining control over recaptured towns, asserting that long-term peace is contingent on sustained governance and community protection.
