They also demanded freedom for the Palestinian people.
On September 9, 2025, around 150 left-wing lawmakers gathered at the entrance of Spain’s Congress to demand “Freedom for Gaza” and an end to what they termed Israel’s genocide, reports 24brussels.
Politicians from several parties, including the Socialist Party (PSOE), Sumar movement, Basque nationalist coalition Euskal Herria Bildu, and others participated in the demonstration, carrying signs in multiple languages calling for an end to the violence in Gaza. PSOE President Cristina Narbona and Sumar spokesperson Veronica Martinez Barbero led the group while holding a Palestinian flag.
Although Sumar legislators acknowledged the Spanish government’s initiatives to address the situation in Gaza, they urged a complete severance of diplomatic ties with Israel. They also condemned a recent Israeli military action against a humanitarian vessel intended for Gaza.
“We must increase international pressure and closely monitor this mission. European governments must protect the flotilla,” Martinez Barbero stated.
On the previous day, Spanish President Pedro Sanchez announced new measures against Israel, including the urgent approval of a royal decree aimed at permanently stopping arms trade. These measures involve barring entry to Spanish territory for individuals directly involved in the violence and restricting access to Spain’s airspace for aircraft transporting defense materials to Israel.
Socialist spokesperson Patxi Lopez remarked that while the government’s actions fall short of effectively halting the killings in Gaza, they are “paving the way and going ahead of the European Union.”
Since the offensive commenced in October 2023, the Gaza-based Health Ministry reports that the Israeli military has killed over 64,000 Palestinians and injured at least 162,000.
In a recent event, the UN condemned an Israeli strike in Doha on a Hamas delegation engaged in ceasefire negotiations, labeling it a violation of international law.
