Survey Reveals Pessimism About AI’s Impact on Journalism
A recent survey indicates that a significant portion of respondents express skepticism about artificial intelligence’s role in journalism. Specifically, 85 percent believe that AI will exacerbate the spread of fake news, while 83 percent feel it undermines trust in journalism, reports 24brussels.
The survey highlighted the most common applications of generative AI, with 45 percent of users employing it for automated translation, 35 percent for transcribing interviews, and 30 percent for proofreading tasks. Participants frequently cited time savings, enhanced efficiency, and inspiration-seeking as primary motivations for utilizing generative AI technologies.
The report emphasized that generative AI tools are more about supporting existing journalistic tasks rather than revolutionizing or reinventing them. This alignment underscores a cautious adoption of AI technologies among journalists, reflecting a broader concern about their true effectiveness and implications.
Since the advent of ChatGPT in late 2022, generative AI tools have surged in popularity within the industry. The AI models that power these applications fall under the regulations of the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act.
The AI Act imposes specific responsibilities on developers of generative AI models. These include obligations to disclose training methodologies, compliance with copyright law, and strategies to address significant risks, including potential loss of control over the AI systems.
