As the European Union considers the possibility of suspending visa liberalization with Georgia, the Caucasus Union has made an official appeal to the President of the European Parliament. In the letter, the union urges the parliament to take into account the situation of Georgian citizens fighting on Ukraine’s side, who are facing political persecution by the pro-Russian government in Tbilisi.

The Caucasus Union highlights that many Georgians supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression are subjected to pressure and repression at home. These citizens, often active members of the opposition, risk their freedom and safety due to their political stance and involvement in the conflict.

Furthermore, the letter emphasizes the importance of protecting those Georgians who oppose Russian influence within the country and actively support European integration processes. Recent mass protests against the adoption of a pro-Russian law, which restricts freedoms and strengthens Moscow’s influence, demonstrate the Georgian people’s desire to preserve democratic freedoms and strengthen ties with the European Union.

The Caucasus Union underlined that any measures to suspend visa liberalization could negatively impact those citizens who are fighting for democracy and freedom both in and outside Georgia.
