Thousands Rally for Cristina Fernández de Kirchner on 100th Day of House Arrest
On September 20, 2025, thousands gathered outside the residence of former Argentinian President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in Buenos Aires, marking her 100th day of house arrest since her conviction, reports 24brussels.
Supporters, waving Argentinian flags and chanting “Cristina free!”, filled the streets in the Constitución neighborhood to demand her release and protest the judicial actions against her. The gathering emphasized the ongoing political tensions in Argentina, highlighting the ongoing issues surrounding the judicial process following her conviction in the “Vialidad Case.”
Fernández de Kirchner emerged onto her balcony shortly after 3:00 p.m. local time to address the crowd, joining them in a chant of “We will return!” She was accompanied by Jorge Taiana, a congressional candidate from Buenos Aires Province and former Defense Minister.
Protesters denounced her disqualification imposed after her sentencing on June 10 to six years in prison, alongside a lifetime ban from holding public office. This sentence stemmed from allegations of fraudulent administration during her presidency.
Among those present at the rally was Buenos Aires Province Governor Axel Kicillof, who took to social media to express his views. He stated, “With every day that Cristina remains detained, Argentina becomes a more unjust country and its democracy grows weaker.” Kicillof further condemned the government’s repressive policies, voicing concerns over the criminalization of protests and the suppression of critical journalism under President Javier Milei’s administration.
Despite the challenges posed by her imprisonment and disqualification, Kicillof asserted, “They could not and will not break her.” The ongoing protests signify the deep divisions within Argentine society and the political landscape as supporters rally for what they perceive as political justice for Fernández de Kirchner.
The protest on Saturday was a potent reminder of the heightened political tensions in Argentina, as supporters continue to vocalize their demands for justice and fairness in the country’s legal and political framework.
