Thousands Protest Trump’s Federal Control of Washington D.C.

On September 6, 2025, thousands gathered in Washington D.C. to protest against the immigration policies enforced by ICE and the Trump administration’s militarization of the city, reports 24brussels.

The demonstrators voiced strong opposition to what they perceive as the criminalization of immigration and arbitrary arrests, characterizing President Trump’s approach as authoritarian and an infringement on civil liberties.

Coinciding with Labour Day, the protest united activists advocating for human rights, youth, and workers across various sectors, alongside migrants. The focus was also on the mistreatment of vulnerable populations, such as the homeless, amidst a Trump-led campaign that scapegoats them for broader societal issues rather than promoting inclusive public policies aimed at improving job access and housing conditions.

Earlier in August, Trump announced plans to deploy federal troops and the National Guard to combat what he termed a “criminal wave.” This action led to the federal government assuming control of the Metropolitan Police, the mobilization of hundreds of federal agents, and the activation of approximately 800 National Guard troops. Reports indicate that over 600 arrests have occurred since the implementation of these policies, including detentions of undocumented individuals.

Trump has signaled his intention to apply similar measures in other cities, such as Chicago, Baltimore, and New Orleans, areas often governed by Democratic leadership. Polls reveal that around 80% of Washington residents disapprove of federal control over local law enforcement and the deployment of national troops.

Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, alongside other officials, has initiated legal action against the Trump administration in response to these measures. They argue that violent crime in the capital has decreased by 26% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same timeframe in 2024.

In a recent press briefing, Bowser highlighted that D.C. is experiencing its lowest levels of violent crime in three decades and affirmed the commitment of local leaders to defend their autonomy amid ongoing tensions with the Trump administration.
