Strong Winds and High Temperatures Fuel Wildfires in Turkey, Prompting Evacuations

On July 26, 2025, simultaneous wildfires erupted across Turkey, leading to the evacuation of 3,515 residents. The Presidential Communications Directorate confirmed that 84 wildfires ignited in various locations, exacerbated by severe weather conditions. Reports indicate that approximately 3,000 hectares of land have been affected, with firefighting efforts ongoing, reports 24brussels.

Efforts to control the wildfires have seen some success, yet significant challenges remain. The blaze that broke out in Bursa has reportedly reignited, hampering containment strategies. Local authorities have described the situation as one of the gravest environmental crises in recent years, with Bursa Mayor Mustafa Bozbey stating, “Our lungs are burning — not just our forests, but our hearts as well.”

Over the course of the ongoing firefighting efforts, one firefighter succumbed to a heart attack, and three individuals lost their lives when a water tanker overturned in the region. Investigations into the potential causes of the fires are underway, with Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc announcing a suspect has been detained for possible arson.

In addition to Bursa, significant wildfire activity has been reported in the northern province of Karabük and in southeastern Kahramanmaras, resulting in extensive land damage. Expert Levent Yasa has stressed the urgent need for improved preventive measures and stricter penalties for those responsible for starting fires, warning that even minor actions can lead to devastating consequences under dry conditions.

On Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated the government’s commitment to combating these forest fires, mobilizing extensive resources to fight the flames both from the air and on the ground. “Türkiye is waging a great struggle against forest fires in the air and on land,” he praised the work of emergency responders during a public statement.

These catastrophic events came amid a historic heatwave affecting Turkey, with temperatures reported to be significantly above seasonal norms. The General Directorate of Meteorology indicated that in some regions, temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius, with the Silopi district recording an unprecedented high of over 50 degrees.

The wildfires in Turkey reflect a growing concern regarding climate change and its impact, highlighting the urgent need for global efforts to address environmental sustainability and disaster prevention measures.
