U.S. Envoy’s Controversial Remarks Ignite Backlash in Lebanon
A recent visit by U.S. envoy Tom Barak to Beirut has ignited controversy following remarks and behavior perceived as disrespectful by Lebanese journalists and political observers, reports 24brussels.
The incident transpired during a press conference at the Presidential Palace, where Barak allegedly dismissed reporters’ inquiries, labeling their behavior as “animalistic” and “chaotic.”
Barak’s remarks surfaced as journalists sought insight into Lebanon’s unstable position amid rising fears of conflict with Israel or internal turmoil. His tone drew widespread condemnation for being condescending, reminiscent of the Trump administration’s diplomatic style characterized by public rebuke and insensitivity to local contexts.
Lebanese media figures and activists reacted with indignation. Journalist Samar Abu Khalil described the encounter as “a humiliation of our dignity,” while political commentator Bilal Rayan termed it “a continuation of American arrogance in the region.”
Intensifying the backlash, U.S. envoy Morgan Ortagus was seen laughing during the exchange and later appeared in public sporting a deliberately styled haircut, interpreted by many as a provocative gesture.
Lebanese observers viewed this as emblematic of a colonial mindset, particularly given the backdrop of U.S. pressure on the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah.
In a televised address, Hezbollah Deputy Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem condemned the government’s pursuit of disarmament under what he described as “American-Israeli dictates.” He reaffirmed the organization’s refusal to surrender its weapons, asserting they represent “our soul, our land, our dignity, and our children’s future.”
Despite canceling a planned protest to prevent escalation, Hezbollah and its ally Amal emphasized the necessity for “deep and constructive dialogue” regarding Lebanon’s future.
