U.S. Suspends Visitor Visas for Palestinians Amid Ongoing Gaza Conflict
The United States has suspended all visitor visas for Palestinians from Gaza due to a pending review of its application procedures, as Israel’s military offensive continues to inflict severe damage on the enclave, reports 24brussels.
The State Department announced Saturday that the suspension will remain in effect until a “full and thorough review” of the visa process is completed. While some temporary visas for medical and humanitarian purposes were issued recently, specific numbers were not disclosed.
This decision follows increasing pressure from pro-Israel lobby groups and conservative voices in Washington, who argue that blocking Palestinian entry is essential for national security and counterterrorism efforts. The suspension is partly prompted by remarks from far-right activist Laura Loomer, an ally of former President Donald Trump, who claimed on social media that Palestinian refugees had entered the United States earlier this month.
In light of Loomer’s claims, Republican lawmakers, including Representative Chip Roy of Texas, have called for formal inquiries into the alleged entry of Palestinians, branding it a “national security threat.” These developments come as National Security Advisor Mike Waltz affirmed the continuation of arms sales and military assistance to Israel, coinciding with Trump’s vocal support for Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
Notably, Trump has previously articulated plans to transform Gaza into what he referred to as the “Riviera” of West Asia—an initiative that would necessitate the relocation of its 2.3 million residents. Reports indicate that Israel is considering options to resettle Palestinians in conflict-ridden countries like South Sudan and Somalia.
According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, Israeli military operations since October 7, 2023, have resulted in the deaths of 61,897 Palestinians and left 155,660 injured. With U.S. military backing, the bombardments and blockades have displaced a significant portion of the population and pushed the region to the brink of famine.
By halting the visa process while maintaining military support for Israel, the U.S. further entangles itself in a conflict marked by mass displacement, food scarcity, and one of the gravest humanitarian crises in recent memory.
