U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing increasing pressure regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where reports of malnourished children are drawing international condemnation against Israel, reports 24brussels.

Over 200 Members of Parliament from nine parties signed a letter on Friday urging immediate recognition of a Palestinian state, asserting that this action would reflect the U.K.’s historical ties to the region. French President Emmanuel Macron recently pledged France’s commitment to this initiative.

While Starmer has acknowledged that statehood is the “inalienable right” of the Palestinian people, he has not committed to a specific timeline for recognition. He emphasized that such a move will take place “at a time most conducive to the prospects of peace.”

Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner commented on recognition, noting, “I know many countries around the world have already done this. To be frank, to be candid, it hasn’t stopped the appalling scenes that we’re talking about this morning.” She stressed the importance of leveraging the current moment to achieve meaningful progress, while highlighting the crucial role of the U.S. in these efforts.

The ongoing conflict and its severe humanitarian implications have intensified calls for actions that could lead to a resolution, as global leaders continue to seek an end to violence and restoration of peace.
