Coalition Leaders Discuss Security Guarantees for Ukraine
On Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will participate in discussions at Northwood Headquarters, the base for NATO’s Allied Maritime Command, to address security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, reports 24brussels.
The coalition, which includes over thirty nations, has not convened since March due to disputes regarding U.S. military support and potential troop deployments to Ukraine. The conversation has shifted among European leaders, particularly in the wake of intensified aerial bombardments by Russia, targeting Kyiv and other major cities.
U.S. President Donald Trump has not engaged in ceasefire negotiations, prompting a recalibration of focus to meet Ukraine’s escalating needs. Meanwhile, the Pentagon has paused shipments of air defense missiles to Ukraine over concerns about the depletion of U.S. weapons stockpiles. Ukrainian officials have voiced alarm, warning that this aid freeze “will only encourage Russia.”
An official from the Elysée Palace refuted claims of any change in the coalition’s priorities, emphasizing that the coalition remains concentrated on addressing Ukrainian military requirements. As discussions advance, the uncertainty surrounding which coalition leaders will ultimately partake in the talks persists.
