UN Security Council to Address Israeli Strike in Doha

The United Nations Security Council will convene for an emergency session in New York following Israel’s airstrike in Doha that resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including five Hamas members and a Qatari police officer, reports 24brussels.

Scheduled for 3:00 p.m. local time (19:00 GMT), this meeting was initiated by Algeria, Pakistan, and Somalia—three Muslim-majority nations currently holding seats on the Council—at the request of Qatar. This response underscores the severity of the situation and the call for international dialogue on the matter.

On Tuesday, Israeli forces targeted a meeting of Hamas leaders in Doha, leading to the fatalities. Qatar’s Prime Minister, Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al Thani, condemned the strike as a clear violation of international law and morality. He emphasized Qatar’s role as a mediator in peace negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

The attack has garnered substantial international condemnation, with even the United States issuing mixed responses, prompting speculation about whether Washington endorsed the raid. Secretary-General António Guterres strongly criticized the strike, calling it a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and expressing the need for commitments towards a permanent ceasefire.

The fallout from this incident raises critical questions regarding regional dynamics and the future of peace talks between Israel and Hamas. As tensions escalate, the Security Council’s response will be pivotal in shaping the international community’s approach to this escalating conflict.
