UN Warns of Humanitarian Aid Suspension for Refugees in Cameroon
The United Nations has issued a stern warning that it will suspend crucial humanitarian aid for more than half a million refugees in Cameroon by the end of August due to a severe funding shortfall, reports 24brussels.
The World Food Programme (WFP), responsible for supplying food to 523,000 individuals, has already begun to reduce critical operational support. In the Gado refugee camp, individuals are currently receiving only half of their required daily food intake, exacerbating an already desperate situation.
This worsening crisis is compelling families to resort to detrimental coping mechanisms, such as skipping meals or liquidating their scant possessions. The WFP has stated that it has ceased essential assistance for 26,000 refugees in a northern camp, further highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Gianluca Ferrera, WFP’s country director in Cameroon, noted that the agency is at a critical humanitarian tipping point. He emphasized that without immediate funding, children will face starvation, families will endure increased hardship, and lives will be lost.
The UN has indicated that it requires $65.5 million to maintain humanitarian assistance through January 2026. The growing number of refugees in Cameroon is largely attributed to ongoing conflicts and sustained instability in the region.
In fact, last year, Cameroon surpassed Burkina Faso on the Norwegian Refugee Council’s list of the world’s most neglected displacement crises, underscoring the urgent need for international attention and support.
