Trump Announces G20 Summit in Miami, Facing Criticism
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the 2026 G20 summit will be hosted at his owned Trump Doral resort in Miami, Florida. This decision marks the first time in nearly two decades that the U.S. will host the event, reports 24brussels.
“As we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary next year, the United States will have the honor of hosting the G20 summit for the first time in nearly 20 years,” Trump stated during a press briefing in the Oval Office.
Critics have raised concerns over potential conflicts of interest, arguing that the summit’s location could allow Trump to profit from the event. The Trump Doral resort encompasses over 300 acres, includes four golf courses, and is situated just 10 kilometers from Miami International Airport.
Trump expressed his openness to welcoming Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping to the summit. “I would love for them to [come], if they want to,” he mentioned, addressing inquiries regarding their potential attendance.
He clarified, however, that if either leader decides to attend, “they would be observers,” and he speculated that neither would accept this designation.
Additionally, Trump confirmed his absence from this year’s G20 meeting in South Africa due to ongoing political disputes with its leadership. Vice President J.D. Vance will represent the U.S. at the summit instead.
