Denmark Offers Support as U.S. Halts Military Aid to Ukraine
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has expressed her readiness to fill potential gaps in military support for Ukraine, following the White House’s confirmation that the U.S. will cease shipments of air defense missiles and certain precision munitions. This announcement corroborates earlier reports about the reduction in American military aid, reports 24brussels.
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Denmark has been a significant ally to Ukraine, contributing nearly €10 billion in military and civilian assistance. Frederiksen has consistently advocated for maintaining pressure on Russia within the EU.
“If there are any gaps [left by the U.S.], I personally believe that we should be willing to fill them,” Frederiksen stated, highlighting Denmark’s commitment to supporting Ukraine.
During a press conference alongside Frederiksen and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of continued American support. He pointed out that certain military equipment, particularly Patriot missiles essential for intercepting Russian drones and missiles, cannot be easily replaced by European nations.
When asked about upcoming discussions between former President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Zelenskyy criticized Moscow for not adhering to ceasefire agreements and noted that he would likewise engage with Trump in the coming days.
Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to aiding Ukraine, citing that EU nations have disbursed €24 billion in military support this year. This support has included 2 million artillery shells, underscoring Europe’s ongoing efforts to assist Kyiv.
While this assistance exceeds the U.S. contribution, it still falls short of the combined levels of aid provided by Washington and its European allies prior to the recent reductions in U.S. military support.
