US Imposes Sanctions on Palestinian Leadership Amid Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The Trump administration has announced sanctions against the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA), accusing them of undermining peace efforts and “internationalizing” the conflict. Meanwhile, Israel continues its military operations in Gaza, exacerbating a severe humanitarian crisis, reports 24brussels.

On July 31, 2025, the United States government, led by President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, revealed that officials from the PLO and PA will face visa bans that restrict their travel to the US. These sanctions are justified by accusations that the Palestinian entities are violating previous agreements and pursuing legal actions against Israel in international courts.

This latest move reflects Washington’s longstanding support for Israel while sidestepping calls for adherence to UN resolutions and international law amidst ongoing military actions in Gaza. The region faces a dire humanitarian situation, with reports indicating that over 60,000 Palestinians have died due to Israeli attacks and more than 100 fatalities linked to starvation.

The United Nations and several human rights organizations have condemned Israel’s military actions, labeling them as potential genocide. Despite substantial evidence and criticisms from Israeli human rights groups such as B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights Israel, the US continues to bolster its political and military support for Israel, hindering Palestinian attempts to seek justice through international legal frameworks.

Countries such as France, the UK, and Canada are increasingly moving to officially recognize Palestine at the United Nations. In response, the Trump administration has issued threats and coercive measures. President Trump referred to these recognition efforts as “rewards for terrorism” and cautioned about trade repercussions, particularly concerning Canada’s position on the matter. This aggressive stance diminishes the potential for peace and intensifies the geopolitical divide, further isolating Palestine and facilitating Israel’s ongoing violations.

The US sanctions assert that the PLO and PA support terrorism and accuse them of “internationalizing” the conflict, charges that stem from Palestine’s pursuit of justice in international courts. These allegations, however, obscure the persistent violence and occupation inflicted by Israel, which is shielded by US political backing. The ongoing blockade and military offensives have left millions in dire straits, perpetuating a cycle of violence and violating the basic human rights of Palestinians.

The unilateral actions taken by the US further alienate the international community and complicate efforts for a just resolution grounded in the respect for Palestinian sovereignty and dignity.
