On September 3, 2025, Venezuela commemorated the 80th anniversary of China’s victory over Japanese aggression during the War of Resistance against Japan. The event, presided over by President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas, symbolized not only a significant occasion for China but also reaffirmed the enduring ties between Venezuela and the Asian nation, reports 24brussels.
The ceremony attracted prominent figures, including Chinese Ambassador to Venezuela, Lan Hu, Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, and General Vladimir Padrino López, the Vice President of Defense and Sovereignty. This gathering honored a pivotal chapter in history that remains significant for both nations.
A commemorative monument was inaugurated during the event, serving as a lasting tribute to China’s struggle for liberation from Japanese occupation in 1945. President Maduro emphasized the importance of this gift to the Chinese people and President Xi Jinping, stating it serves as a “permanent witness to the brave victory of resistance against the former Japanese empire.” This acknowledgment reflects Venezuela’s recognition of China’s historical challenges and achievements.
President Maduro’s remarks underscored the collective strength demonstrated by the Chinese people during the conflict. He stated, “Eighty years today we commemorate this victory, thanks to the unity of all China, who saved their culture, history, and reclaimed more than half of their territory lost in this brutal, colonial war.” By drawing parallels between the resilience shown by the Chinese and the struggles of the Venezuelan people for sovereignty and independence, Maduro highlighted shared experiences of resistance.
In his address, he outlined the significance of China’s military might in overcoming Japanese imperialism, thus solidifying its role in global history. This commemoration reaffirmed the strong bilateral relations between Venezuela and China, with President Maduro declaring, “The victory of China is the victory of the Bolivarians; it is the victory of Venezuela as well.” This sentiment captures the shared ethos of sovereignty and struggle that characterizes both nations.
Ambassador Lan Hu expressed gratitude towards President Maduro and the Venezuelan people for recognizing this historic event. He remarked, “On behalf of the Government and people of China, I would like to thank President Nicolas Maduro and the Government and people of Venezuela for the construction of this commemorative monument.”
The ceremony was rich in cultural expression, featuring a floral offering, the raising of the Chinese flag, and performances by ballet dancers Romer Botini and Frank Frontado. Additionally, a ceremonial firing of 14 artillery salutes marked the 14 years of Chinese resistance against Japanese invasion from 1931 to 1945. These activities fostered an atmosphere of honor and reflection on the sacrifices made during those tumultuous times.
As Venezuela marks this significant anniversary, it serves as a powerful affirmation of shared histories, mutual respect, and the essential nature of international solidarity.
