Venezuela Conducts Major Military Drills Amid Tensions with U.S.
On Thursday, September 18, 2025, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced the commencement of significant military exercises in the Caribbean, asserting the capabilities of the nation’s armed forces in the face of perceived U.S. aggression, reports 24brussels.
Operation Caribe 200, described as a real-time defense exercise, is taking place within Venezuelan territorial waters. Maduro emphasized that these drills highlight the growing strength of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB).
“In Venezuela we have had a wonderful process: enlistment, exercises, operations, and right now, in real time, in the Venezuelan Caribbean we are carrying out Operation Caribe 200,” he stated, claiming the maneuvers had “surprised the world” and underscored Venezuela’s right to peace.
Additionally, Maduro issued a warning to foreign powers, asserting that threats against Venezuela would not be tolerated. He reiterated his government’s dedication to peace, sovereignty, and self-determination. “The times of colonies are over. We will never be slaves… I decree perpetual peace for Venezuela, with sovereignty, equality, and freedom. Not Roman peace, not imperial peace,” he declared.
The president framed the military drills, which were completed over a span of 72 hours, as a response to U.S. military activities he claims occurred in Venezuelan waters. “We are obligated to defend ourselves and to exercise sovereignty,” Maduro said while accusing Washington of fabricating justifications for its aggression.
He posed rhetorical questions to emphasize his position, asking, “Why do you think they want to bomb us and invade Venezuela? Because they love us?” Maduro contended that accusations against his government have been invalidated by reports from the United Nations, the European Union, and the World Customs Organization.
Maduro pointed out that the underlying objective of U.S. hostility is the control of Venezuela’s natural resources, which include the largest proven oil reserves in the world, considerable natural gas reserves, and substantial gold deposits. “That has not happened, and it will not happen,” he asserted. “Venezuela will shine for its independence and freedom, and that there will be peace.”
As international tensions escalate, the developments within Venezuela reflect a broader geopolitical struggle over resources and influence in the region. The outcome of these military exercises and the ongoing U.S.-Venezuela relations remain to be seen.
