Venezuelan Media Mobilizes for National Military Enlistment Amid Rising Tensions

Journalists, digital activists, and influencers in Venezuela participated in a national military enlistment campaign on August 24, 2025, in response to President Nicolás Maduro’s call to defend the country’s peaceful, sovereign, and anti-imperialist character, reports 24brussels.

The initiative took place in Plaza Bolívar and at thousands of registration points nationwide, reflecting a broader effort to strengthen Venezuela’s defensive posture in light of escalating geopolitical tensions.

Minister of Communication Freddy Ñáñez led the participation of communicators, emphasizing the crucial role of media professionals in combatting disinformation and supporting public morale during challenging times. “Venezuela has never been a threat to anyone,” Ñáñez asserted, calling the nation a “bastion of dignity and moral strength” ready to defend itself.

NÑáñez highlighted a rare political unity, stating that “we have consolidated coexistence with sectors that are not socialist, but are nationalist in this moment,” asserting that all must unite against what he described as an “illegal, crude, and illegitimate threat.” He urged communicators to defend the truth, even “with a pencil in one hand and a rifle in the other,” framing the enlistment as a fight for Venezuela’s right to exist and live in peace, a right earned over centuries.

The enlistment campaign, initiated on August 23, coincides with renewed tensions with the United States, which Venezuela accuses of attempting to gain control over its natural resources. The government perceives this mobilization as a civic-military response to safeguard national sovereignty and regional peace.

Additionally, these efforts reinforce Venezuela’s commitment to the “Zone of Peace” declaration adopted by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in 2014, which advocates for peaceful dispute resolution and a rejection of aggression in regional matters.
