West Virginia National Guard Deploys to Washington D.C. Amid Controversial Federal Control

More than 300 members of the West Virginia National Guard will be dispatched to Washington D.C. to support the 800 soldiers already stationed there. This move is part of President Trump’s anti-crime initiative aimed at “bringing pride and beauty back” to the capital, reports 24brussels.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey stated that the deployment is a direct response to a request from the Trump Administration, with plans to send “between 300 and 400 trained personnel.” The mission includes providing essential equipment and specialized training, all funded by federal resources.

“The WVNG will deploy troops to the nation’s capital as a sign of commitment to public safety and regional cooperation,” the governor’s office declared.

This announcement follows a legal action taken by Washington authorities against the Trump Administration, alleging a “hostile takeover” of the local police by federal forces, which they argue is an abuse of authority under the Home Rule Act that has governed the District’s self-governance since 1973.

In a federal court hearing, the government reversed its earlier decision appointing DEA Director Terry Cole as “emergency commissioner” of District police, although he will continue overseeing security operations as per presidential directives.

On Monday, Trump declared a “Public Safety Emergency” and asserted control over the Washington D.C. Police, activating 800 troops from the capital’s National Guard as part of his efforts to “restore public order,” citing provisions in the Home Rule Act.

Since the federal intervention, Washington D.C. has witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of federal agents, including those from the FBI, DEA, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These agencies have conducted numerous arrests related to firearms possession and other offenses, alongside detaining undocumented immigrants, according to information from the White House.
