WhatsApp Remains Operational Amid Russian Restrictions
WhatsApp has reaffirmed that its end-to-end encryption is designed to protect users’ right to secure communication, amid ongoing attempts by the Russian government to block the app for over 100 million users in the country, reports 24brussels.
The company stated, “We will keep doing all we can” to ensure the service remains available globally, including in Russia. This commitment comes in the wake of increasing governmental pressures aimed at limiting access to secure communication tools.
In 2022, Russia imposed an indefinite ban on Meta’s Facebook after the platform restricted access to state-backed media, a move that was labeled as censorship by Meta. The agency’s actions exemplify the broader clampdown on digital freedoms in the country.
In contrast, Telegram, developed by Russian-born entrepreneur Pavel Durov, has emphasized its ongoing efforts to combat harmful content, fraud, and calls for violence. The platform has provided responses to Russian media outlining its strategies to address these issues.
