China and Russia Discuss Ukraine Situation Amid Strengthening Ties

On August 8, 2025, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation to address the ongoing situation in Ukraine and reiterated the strategic nature of their bilateral relationship, reports 24brussels.

During the call, Putin elaborated on Russia’s stance regarding the war in Ukraine and commended China’s involvement in pursuing a political resolution. Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to fostering dialogue and advocated for a ceasefire, emphasizing that “complex problems have no simple solutions.” He urged all parties to maintain open communication channels and continue negotiations.

Both leaders highlighted the “high level of mutual political trust and strategic coordination” between their nations and expressed their determination to enhance their bilateral relations further.

They also agreed to collaborate closely on organizing the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, scheduled to take place in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1. Putin is expected to visit China in September to participate in the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, reaffirming Moscow’s resolve to strengthen its connections with Beijing across various sectors, including energy and trade.

In recent years, China and Russia have fortified their alliance through frequent high-level exchanges and increased cooperation in fields such as energy, defense, and technology. Since the onset of the war in Ukraine, Beijing has refrained from condemning Moscow’s actions, defended its “legitimate security concerns,” and consistently advocated for a diplomatic approach to resolve the conflict.
